Banaue and Batad — Steps to Heaven, Built by Human Hands

Translation

When you finally step out of the car in Banaue, the first thing you want to do is simply fall silent. You look at the mountains and realize: what you see isn’t just beautiful. It is impossible.

Entire mountain ranges have been transformed into giant, perfectly calibrated staircases. Thousands of years ago, there were no machines, no blueprints, no engineering universities here. There were only the people of the Ifugao tribe, their belief in nature spirits, and incredible persistence. They literally “carved” these steps out of the cliffs to grow rice.

Banaue: A Panorama That Makes Your Head Spin

Banaue is, if you will, the showcase of the Cordilleras. The main viewpoints offer the sight printed on all Philippine postcards. But there is a secret: to truly feel this place, you need to step off the paved road and head down.

At Werdana, we try to show our guests not just the “Instagrammable” Banaue, but how people live here today. We visit local villages where grandfathers and grandmothers still remember ancient songs and rituals. Here, the spirits of the mountains are still honored, and rice is considered a sacred gift that must not be wasted.

Batad: The One and Only “Amphitheater”

If Banaue is about grandeur, then Batad is about intimacy. You cannot reach it by minivan. You must leave your transport above, put on comfortable shoes, and walk along a narrow trail.

And just as you pass the final turn, Batad opens up before you. It is a natural stone amphitheater. The terraces here soar steeply upward, creating the effect of a giant bowl filled with bright green rice. There is no hustle and bustle, no cellular service, and it feels like you’ve entered another reality where time flows by its own rules.

Trekking to Tappiya Falls

Simply admiring the view is good, but if you want to truly “taste” Batad, you need to go to Tappiya Falls. This is an honest, serious trek along the terrace steps.

  • Why it matters: This is not a light walk in the park. You will be jumping over stones, feeling your muscles work, and realizing how difficult it actually is to cultivate this rice.

  • The Reward: When you reach Tappiya at the end of the path and see this powerful pillar of water falling into a crystal-clear basin… the fatigue vanishes instantly. You jump into the ice-cold water and feel absolutely alive.

Traveler’s Tip

Many ask: “When is the best time to go?”. The answer is simple: rice is a plant that changes color. At different times of the year, the terraces can be bright emerald, golden, or even mirror-like (when the fields are flooded before planting). Each of these states is beautiful in its own way, but most importantly—do not plan a “gallop” here. Banaue does not like haste. It is a place for those who want to stop and take a deep breath.

At Werdana, we believe: to understand the Philippines, you must wake up in the mountains at least once, when the clouds still lie down in the valley and the sun is just beginning to illuminate the tops of the terraces. That feeling—it stays with you for a lifetime.
