Mindanao is located in the south of the Philippine archipelago. Mindanao, along with the Sulu islands, Siargao Island, and numerous smaller islets, forms the Mindanao island group (one of the three main divisions of the Philippine archipelago).
The coastline of Mindanao is complex, featuring large bays and peninsulas. To the west stretches the Zamboanga Peninsula, bordering Moro Gulf. In the southeast, Davao Gulf cuts into Mindanao, on the shores of which lies the island’s main city—Davao—the largest in the country by land area and the third-largest by population.
